PNG vs JPG: which keeps a transparent background?
PNG keeps a transparent background; JPG can’t. JPG has no transparency channel, so any transparent area is filled with a solid colour (usually white or black) when you save. Use PNG for logos, stickers and cut-outs, and JPG for photos on a solid background where small files matter.
When to use PNG
- Logos and icons that sit on different coloured backgrounds.
- Cut-out people or products you’ll place into a design, slide or video.
- Stickers, mugs and print-on-demand designs.
When to use JPG
- Photos on a solid background, such as white product photos for Amazon or Shopify.
- Anything where file size matters: JPG files are usually several times smaller than PNG for photos.
- Uploads that require JPG (many marketplaces prefer it).
Why your “transparent” image has a white box
It was saved or converted as JPG somewhere along the way, or the image was never transparent (a white background is still a background). Remove the background and download as PNG to get real transparency.
