How to remove the background from a photo on iPhone
On recent iPhones you can touch and hold the subject in the Photos app to lift it from the background, then copy or share the cut-out. For a full-size transparent PNG, or to put a new background behind the subject, open a browser tool such as changebg in Safari and upload the photo, including HEIC files.
Option 1: the Photos app
This is quick for messages and notes, but you don’t choose the background, and results depend on the photo.
- Open the photo in Photos.
- Touch and hold the subject until it lifts with a glowing outline.
- Choose Copy or Share, then paste the cut-out into another app.
Option 2: in Safari, with a new background
- Open changebg.app/remove-background in Safari.
- Tap Upload and pick the photo. HEIC photos work.
- Keep transparent, or pick white, a colour or (with HD) a photo background.
- Tap Download to save a PNG or JPG to Photos or Files.
Tips
- Hair and fur look most natural with HD.
- For a sticker, keep the background transparent and save as PNG.
- The free version runs on your iPhone; photos are never stored.
