How to blur the background of a photo (portrait mode effect)

Updated

To blur a background after the photo was taken, the subject is cut out, the original background is blurred, and the sharp subject is placed back on top, the same idea as phone portrait mode. In changebg, upload the photo, choose Blur original (part of HD + photo background) and adjust the strength.

Step by step

  1. Upload the photo on changebg.
  2. Under Photo backgrounds, choose Blur original.
  3. Move the slider until it looks natural; a little blur usually looks more real than a lot.
  4. Download a full-size PNG or JPG.

When blur looks natural

  • Portraits and products with some distance between subject and background.
  • Busy backgrounds (streets, rooms, crowds) that distract from the subject.
  • Light blur for profile pictures; stronger blur for social posts.

Why the edges matter

A blurred background makes any mistake at the edge of the subject easy to spot, especially around hair. HD cutouts give much cleaner hair and fur edges, which is why blur is part of HD + photo background.

Frequently asked questions

Can I blur the background of a photo I already took?

Yes. The subject is separated from the background automatically, so you can blur the background after the fact.

Is background blur free?

Blur is part of HD + photo background: $1.99 for one photo, or 2 credits (from $1.00 with credit packs). Plain colour and transparent backgrounds are free.
